The older streets of Norwich — from Heigham and Earlham to the tightly packed rows off Magdalen Road — are lined with two-storey terraced houses that still carry their original brick chimney stacks. Many of these stacks were built with lime mortar that has long since perished, leaving loose bricks and cracked haunching that pose a genuine risk, particularly on properties with multiple flues serving fireplaces that may not even be in use any more.
